Charles (Chang-Han) Liu 劉昌漢
Charles Liu is a leading overseas Chinese/Taiwanese artist, curator and art critic. He was born in Shanghai, China and raised in Taiwan. After graduation from National Taiwan College of Arts, he went to Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in and settled down. He taught at North Central College, Illinois.
Mr. Liu has been invited by international art exhibits numerous times, and conducted more than a dozen solo exhibitions in Spain., U.S.A., China and Taiwan, search as Herbert F. Johnson Museum in New York State, Marjorie Barrick Museum in Las Vegas, Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls, Pacific Asia Museum and Silicon Valley Asian Art Center in California, Three Allen Center in Houston, The Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art in Taiwan, National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, Art Biennial in Shanghai, National Art Museum of China in Beijing, etc. He received “Challenge America”Grant award from National Endowment for the Arts in 2011.
He published more than 500 articles on art, curated "The Beauty of Ink --Exhibition of Ink Paintings by Contemporary master Artists in North America" in Chicago, 1994; "The Third Kind of Encounter--A Group Exhibition of Asian Artists from Chicago" in New York, 1998; "Miao Li Mask Art Festival Exhibition" in Taiwan, 2003; Traveling exhibitions "Place / Displace: Three Generations of Taiwanese Art", "Taiwan: From within the Mist " and "Extreme Sensibility-Taiwanese Contemporary Video Art" in United States, Canada and Taiwan, 2004-2006, 2007-2008.and 2009-2010. "Ink Imagists: Modern Ink Paintings from Taiwan, Japan and the U.S." in New York, 2016, "KUSO Project: Contemporary art exhibition from Taiwan" in Las Vegas, 2016. "Psychic of Light" in Sugar Land, Texas, 2017.
He edited "Artists of Chinese Origin in North America Directory" I and II, "Artists of Taiwan". He published award-winning "The Chinese Overseas Art Icons of the 100 Years (20th Century)" and "Yi-Lin-Wai-Shi: Art is so charming", etc. In 2013, "A Review on Chinese Ink Painting in North America" published in China. In 2015, "Discover Museum" published in Taiwan. In 2021, " The Landscape Paintings of North America" published in Taiwan. Currently, he is the art columnist for "World Journal Weekly"-largest Chinese daily newspaper in North America, "Artist" magazine in Taiwan.
He has given many lectures including China Institute in New York (2003), Asia Society in New York (2008), Johnson Museum at Cornell University (2008) and Museum of Fine Arts Houston (2017), etc. Commentator of judge experiences includes Ink Painting Contest by Chinese Fine Arts Society, Taiwanese Youth Painting Contest, Chinese Youth Writing Contest, Beauty Contest Miss Chinese-Chicago, etc. His artworks collected by many museums, include Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science, Silicon Valley Asian Art Center, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, National Art Museum of China, etc.
劉昌漢為旅美重要畫家與國際藝術策展人,1947年生於上海,幼年時隨父母居住日本,6歲後在台灣成長。國立台灣藝術專科學校(現國立台灣藝術大學)求學時獲全省學生美展第一名,畢業後赴西班牙馬德里聖費南度藝術學院深造,因學術表現,獲得台灣僑務委員會頒贈海外優秀青年獎章。在西國七年後於1978年到美國發展,除繪畫創作外,也從事藝術寫作及國際藝術策展工作。曾任教中北學院(North Central College, Illinois)美術系等學府,獲邀在歐洲、美國、加拿大、中國、台灣各美術館展覽講學,包括Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art (紐約州康乃爾大學)、Pacific Asia Museum (加州Pasadena)、Silicon Valley Asian Art Center (加州Santa Clara)、Marjorie Barrick Museum (內華達州拉斯維加斯)、Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science (南達科他州Sioux Falls)、The Contemporary Art Gallery (溫哥華)、中國美術館(北京)、欽哲藝術中心(杭州)、國立台灣美術館 (台中)、國父紀念館 (台北)等等,作品由各美術館典藏。
著作《百年華人美術圖象》、《藝林外史─藝術如此多嬌》、《北美水墨觀覽》、《遊美國、加拿大/發現美術館》、《北美風景繪畫》等,獲海外華文著述獎第一名等多項榮譽。曾為美、加十餘美術館策展,介紹中華藝術。2011年獲得美國國家藝術基金會(National Endowment for the Arts)「美國挑戰獎助」(NEA Challenge America Grant) 榮譽。2013年在休士頓展覽,休士頓市長Annise Parker宣佈揭幕當天為「劉昌漢日」(Charles Liu Day) 。2015年獲國立台灣藝術大學頒贈「建校60週年傑出校友楷模獎」,獲聘中國畫學會(美國)榮譽會長至今。
