Echoes of Shanshui: Charles Chang-Han Liu & Lei Liang – A Symphony of Inkscape and Soundscape
SAN DIEGO, CA – August 13, 2025 – The San Diego Chinese Art and Cultural Society (SDCACS) is proud to announce the premiere of Echoes of Shanshui (Mountain and Water): Charles Chang-Han Liu & Lei Liang. This one-of-a-kind event — blending cinematic storytelling with live performance — will debut on September 20, 2025, at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park.
Artist Charles Chang-Han Liu and composer Lei Liang come together to create a mesmerizing dialogue between ink and sound. Their collaboration explores nature through Chinese philosophy, bridging tradition with contemporary expression. In this unique production, sound becomes visible in Liu's ink paintings while melodies animate brushstrokes — revealing both the beauty and hidden spirit of shanshui.
Experience shanshui painting like never before. This production combines film, live music, contemporary dance, calligraphy, visual AI, penjing (Chinese miniature landscapes), and culinary art into a full sensory exploration.
“This event is for everyone,” says Jojo Ni, President of SDCACS. “Come see, hear, feel, and even taste Shanshui. This isn’t just art to see—it’s art to experience.”
“Shanshui, beyond painted landscapes, reflects a worldview where nature and humanity are one. This event, interweaving painting, music, new media, calligraphy, live performance, and dance, invites a dialogue—with nature, with heaven and earth, and with yourself.,” says Wenny H. Chang, Founder of Wind Eave Cultural Association.
“We are thrilled to be hosting this unique, multi-disciplinary event at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art,” shared Roxana Velásquez, executive director and CEO at The San Diego Museum of Art. “Echoes of Shanshui (Mountain and Water): Charles Chang-Han Liu & Lei Liang is an opportunity to see this exquisite art form in an entirely new perspective. We look forward to welcoming audiences to experience it.”
Guests are encouraged to wear attire inspired by Shanshui's natural scenery.
The event is presented in collaboration with The Wind Eave Cultural Association and Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art.
