Curated by Wenny H. Chang, the film opens with a direct dialogue between two artists—ink painter Charles Chang-Han Liu and composer Lei Liang.  Starting from the tradition of shanshui (Chinese landscape art), they explore how ancient Chinese people appreciated nature and its underlying philosophy through two iconic works: Travelers Among Streams and Mountains and Early Spring.

The program focuses on three key elements of shanshui—Wind, Mountain, and Water—each interpreted through a unique cross-disciplinary performance:

Wind – Cellist Benjamin Fleischack performs Lei Liang’s Wind, blending Eastern and Western instruments and musical languages to capture the flowing spirit of nature.

Mountain – San Diego Symphony principal violist Chi-Yuan Chen performs Journey on a rare 1580 Italian “ex-Ferir” viola crafted by master Gaspar Bertolotti da Salò, delivering a performance both profound and full of resonance.

Water – Choreographer Xingjian Liu presents a new dance work, performed by his student Ella Xing, set to The Moon is Following Us, embodying the graceful and fluid movement of water.

The evening reaches its peak with a segment inspired by the Five Seasons—spring, summer, long summer, autumn, and winter—rooted in the Chinese Five Elements. New media artist Mingyong Cheng uses AI-generated visuals to merge Liu’s paintings with Lei’s compositions, creating an immersive, multi-sensory experience.

The finale features Lei Liang’s latest work on the theme of “Ice,” in collaboration with Cheng’s visuals.

In the lobby, visitors can enjoy Professor Tzu-Ting Cheng’s Microcosmic Landscapes (盆景) and the Shanshui Refreshment, crafted by Le Cordon Bleu chef Kaichi Huang in collaboration with the San Diego Chinese Art & Cultural Society board members—inviting guests to experience shanshui through sight, sound, and taste.
